Description

This research idea came about from discussions that took place at the 2010 Colloquium for Equine reproduction. During the discussion session there was strong opinion from the group considering mare reproductive tract issues, especially from veterinarians, that one of the greatest challenges to achieving satisfactory pregnancy rates is inseminating older maiden mares, who’s cervices fail to adequately relax. One delegate suggested that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) topical cream may provide a practical solution to hasten and promote cervical relaxation, as well as acepromazine (ACP) or administration of oestrogens as alternatives. In order to take this forward, several veterinarians expressed a willingness to trial this approach in their clinnical work over the coming breeding season and report back at an upcoming Colloquium for Equine Reproduction. Debbie Nash will attempt to co-ordinate trialling of PGE2 topical cream through veterinary surgeons via this website.

If you are able to offer help in pushing this idea forward, please leave a comment on the ‘Research Discussion’ or ‘Contacts’ page.

A protocol for administering PGE2 cream and it’s correct formulation has been described in Current Therapy in Equine Medicine 6 (2009) edited by NE Robinson and KA Sprayberry.  If you are a vet or represent a veterinary pharmacology company that help, please contact us through the ‘Contact’ page and we will be pleased to co-ordinate progressing this potential research further.
